Tortoise Pre-Hibernation Advice and Check Evening
Tortoise Pre-Hibernation Advice and Check Evening
As the days get shorter and temperatures begin to fall, tortoises start preparing for hibernation. While hibernation is a natural part of the annual cycle for many tortoise species, it is important to make sure they are fit and healthy before they settle down for the winter.
One of the concerns we particularly want to identify is whether a female tortoise is carrying eggs. Retained eggs can cause serious problems and hibernation can make these issues more difficult to identify and treat. An X-ray is a simple and effective way of checking for eggs before hibernation.
We are therefore holding a Tortoise Pre-Hibernation Advice and Check Evening at our Partridge Green practice on Thursday 8th October.
Jess will give a short talk covering tortoise husbandry, preparation for hibernation and some of the common mistakes that can cause problems. This will be followed by individual health checks and an X-ray of each tortoise, allowing us to make sure they are in suitable condition before hibernation.
Good husbandry is particularly important with reptiles, as many of the problems we see are related to incorrect temperature, lighting, diet or housing rather than underlying disease. Getting these things right before hibernation is an important part of keeping your tortoise healthy.
The cost of the evening is £50 per tortoise, including the advice, health check and X-ray.
If you and are interested and your tortoise is due to hibernate this year, is less than 3 years old and you have owned them for more than 6 months, please fill in the application form by clicking here or contact us and we can book you in for the Hibernation check evening.
